Chances are if you grew up in California and attended public school you probably built a scale model of a California mission at some point in your academic career (for me it was in the fourth grade).
I chose the Mission San Luis Obispo, mostly because of its close vicinity to my favorite beach town, Pismo. After wrangling some cardboard, a little bit of spackle and some acrylic paint-it all came together and I was pretty proud. That summer my family visited the mission. I remember being one part freaked out (Catholics scared me at that time) and one part mesmerized. It was a pretty place.
I still have a big crush on the mission, I mean-in California pretty much all of the architecture is new or newish and here's this cozy little 300+ year old church in the middle of a bustling downtown. It's kinda cool. I know the history of missions isn't exactly all pretty-I mean-what from that time period is, really?
I visited the mission a couple weeks ago with my folks. It's sort of funny to revisit places from your childhood. You realize things are maybe a bit different than you remember.
Hope you enjoy these scenes.
Happy Monday.
