I've always loved farmer's markets.
Who doesn't?
As a teenager, I'd go every Thursday just to hang out and browse. My friends and I would park ourselves on the corner of Church and Main street (literally!) in shiny red chairs outside of Coffee Company and watch the locals gather. Often times a dude who we called "Karaoke Cowboy" would start an impromptu show in the middle of the street. We'd share a flat of fresh berries, drink ginger peach tea and just wait for the sun to set. Those were very fun days.
During this recent trip home, my Mom and I went to the much more formal Saturday morning market and it was a whole different experience. I could not believe how much local goodness was available on a chilly foggy morning.
We browsed through tables of funky citrus, including beautiful blood oranges and a pomelo the size of a large person's head! Bright red bunches of radishes laid next to purplely white turnips. My favorite was the violet cauliflower and yellow broccoli romanesco.
I cannot wait for the Portland market to start.
