spoons, spoons, spoons

Spoontogether
Awhile back, spoons were everywhere. Here, here,  here, here,  and here  are some favorites. But really, how can spoons be just a trend, right? They are always amazing.
When I was little, wooden spoons scared me. My Moms were smooth, burnt a bit on the handle and absolutely perfect. How I wish I had them now. But there was always that threat-the minute we were bad it was-
"Don't make me get the wooden spoon!"
Not that I was ever actually spanked with one, but that sentence was enough to scare me straight!
The photos above are from an ebay user and you can view this sale here.  I'm not in a position to buy them-but if I was-I'd be bidding.

This lot above went for $70! It's from this seller who has other neat things.

82nd Avenue is a place I usually try to stay away from if I can help it.  I would make the bi annual visit to Joann's, Knittn Kitten , and some thrift shops , but other than that I would stay far away. This huge (by Portland standards, anyway) sprawled out boulevard is speckled with "lingerie houses"(strip clubs), fast food joints, litter, shells of former businesses and overall white trashiness.
At least, that was my very harsh judgment of the place-until yesterday.
Silly me, always behind in the times, didn't even realize that this was Portland's new "Chinatown" or Asian Mecca.
After eating at a quaint little vegan pho place, a friend and I ventured to the much loved Fubonn. It's so much more than a super market-it is a feast for the senses quite literally. And I must say, it sure makes for some great people watching.
You can see my photos from Fubonn here.
So, I'm thinking-82nd Ave isn't such a bad place after all.

In blogland some times you stumble across an amazing link that changes you. As silly as this seems-I found one of those links lately and would love to share. Archival Clothing is one of those blogs I may stumble upon and dismiss at first-no outstanding photos, nothing that immediately grabs my attention. But this blog is a resource for all things "old timey".
I found these amazing pants through her as well as this link to super cool bike gear and who doesn't love these bags?  Thanks, lesli!

Thanks

Thank

Not a ton of time right now to post, but I wanted to thank everyone for participating in film week! I hope to create an archive of all the posts-but that's gonna take some time.
Meanwhile, our landlord's been "Working" on our washing machine for over a week now and seeing as how we have no car I've been doing all our laundry by hand. Not fun people! How'd women do it back in the day? I'd love to buy one of these . Anyone out there have any suggestions? thanks

Beautiful Film Week: documentaries

Bel

Well, I'm gonna continue film week right on into Sunday, seeing as how I got a late start! I wanted to thank all of you for your posts, emails, and comments. I've really enjoyed this week and hope to do it again some time.
I really LOVE documentaries. I thought about posting just one-then I thought-why not a list? SO here goes:
      Abel Raises Cain
A hilarious film made by a daughter about her father. Of course, he was no ordinary father, he was a "master spoofer" , probably the best of the modern age. Laughing so hard it hurt, I realized that this was one of the best documentaries I had ever seen. I was lucky enough to see this at a Portland film festival where  the director/daughter  held Q&A  after. She was also funny, genuine and interesting.
     Helvetica
While it's likely that many of you have seen this film, it's making the cut because I love it THAT much. I'm in love with type as it is, but I think anyone with a slight interest in type, or graphic design, or history, or culture-basically anyone who reads this blog will probably like his film.
     Capturing the Friedmans
Please be warned-the website to this film is loud and jarring if you are not prepared(as is the film). I don't even really like the site-too much for me-but I do love the film. This film follows the investigation of an accused pedophile and his family-but through old family movies. The beauty in the film is obviously not the subject matter, to me, the film is more of an investigation of truth, what truth is, the importance or lack of importance of perception and fact. It is really, really interesting and brought up a lot of interesting questions.
In the Realms of the Unreal
I've written about this film several times. It's a favorite and a truly beautiful one.
   Promises
A film that follows seven children who live in and around Jerusalem. It is really, really touching and gees-even the trailer is making me cry! Children are so amazing-so full of hope, of curiosity and insights.

Thanks for everything this week! Feel free to continue to comment with links to your posts, I'll update them through the weekend.

This film is probably hands down the most simple, beautiful film I have ever seen. It follows monks from a tiny floating island through the seasons, revealing a Buddhist fable with each one. The gorgeous setting and profound truths in this film make it a masterpiece.
I watched it twice the first time, and I find new beauty and truths each time I watch it. Please don't read a synopsis-just trust me, and watch it.
