i love this town
*PS***James took the last photo and wants credit for it-there ya go James!
*****thanks for all the well wishes from the last post, you guys are awesome!***
James and I took the bus down to the Pearl today, hoping to eat at our favorite spot, Fuller's coffee shop. It has swively stools, bad coffee, delicious pancakes, "regulars", coat hooks, and cheap prices. We love it. As we approached the cafe, I noticed paint buckets on the counters and men in overalls walking in and out of the doors carrying ladders. In an instant my hopes for a lovely breakfast were dashed. James suggested a nearby cafe, one that a co-worker had mentioned to him.
Now I don't really believe in fate, but after today I almost, ALMOST believe.
Old pennants hung from the ceiling, vintage luggage decorated the space above the bar, behind us on the wall kitschy plates took up about every square inch of space and we were promptly seated in a super cute booth. This place was made for us. Byways cafe is now my new favorite place. I had seen it somewhere before, but never put two and two together. Here are some more pics from this place.
For me, there is almost nothing that beats a good breakfast place.

oh my god - is that heaven?
:D

i grew up going out to breakfast in portland. byways IS a good place. so is fat city in multnomah village which has a similar vibe to byways. and marco's, also in multnomah, is great too (for breakfast, lunch or dinner.) another place we love is besaws on nw 23rd down by thurman. the stepping stone cafe on nw quimby is also good, but can be packed. and last friday we went to lorne and dotties downtown on sw 2nd, a place we hadn't been for years. the 'greek eggs' were really good. (my mom's choice.) and i had poached eggs, pepper bacon, potato pancakes and jalapeno cornbread which was all yummy. all the places i've mentioned are in the same-ish bracket as byways. but we recently went to a fancier breakfast in the pearl at a new place on the corner of 12th and everett. darnit if i can't remember the name, but it was really good, and though we didn't indulge in any of their sweets they looked mighty nice and i guarantee we'll return to try some. oh ya, one of my most favorite breakfasts/brunches in pdx is at the hands on cafe at oregon college of arts and crafts. there's usually 3 or so options to choose from. it's served on school ceramics, and has always been good. is it obvious that i love Love LOVE breakfast? i hope you try/have tried these places. portland is a great breakfast city, wouldn't you agree?

Mmmm breakfast!! Yum!! I like little places like that. I remember eating breakfast at this tiny tiny diner in San Francisco. It was sooo small. I don't remember there being any tables. Just the bar. There wasn't room for anything else. And they had old pictures everywhere. I wish I was there now having breakfast.

looks amazing... cute and cozy and full of little details. those are the best breakfast places!
i love breakfast, long lingery weekend ones in a neighbhorhood place. i haven't found my *perfect* one in florida. but there was one just down the street from my house in new orleans, the panola street cafe, that is just the platonic ideal of breakfast. amazing food, great service, cheap, wonderful local art on the walls... love!

I use to take breakfast for granted when I was a youngin', now it's definitely my favorite meal. I wish I can indulge in it more but I lack time during the week so it's the quick bagel and coffee for me. The weekends I splurge. This is a cute looking place, I wish I had place like this in my area.
